We all love the idea of a growing income. Some find it in working extra hard, saving some money in the bank, or by having better sales as an entrepreneur. Then, there are also those who preferred to do it the easier way—by investing their money.

Each of the aforementioned methods has its own way of incrementing your income, albeit more or less than others.  But no other method from this list is ever as lucrative as the one wisely invested in the stock market.

What is a Stock Market?

There are a handful of ways a “stock market” can be described based on a vernacular that is foreign even for a native English-speaker. When you speak of “stock market,” after all, you talk about jargons like equities, stocks, or bonds that can easily dumbfound. If not for the stock market, these terms would not even make it in the English dictionary.

Apart from the risk involved, this sort of obscurity with the terms is an issue for most people.

But what is the stock market, really?

In simple terms, the stock market is a hub for buyers and sellers who are in it for one thing—make money (and even, in the worst-case scenario, lose some in the process). But instead of tangible stuff, these people in the stock market thrive on intangible ones. Such as previously mentioned, bonds, equities, or stocks.

Sellers are in the stock market to sell their investments at a higher price than what they paid for. While buyers are probably there to buy stocks at low enough price to profit from at a later future. But there are also investors who are essentially lending money to entities—company or government—simply for interest.

Here are some simple terms that you need to know about the stock market

  • Stock Market is where investors connect to buy and sell stocks.
  • Stocks or Shares are quantified part-ownership of a public company.
  • Public Companies are companies that offer their stocks to the public.
  • Stock Brokers are the middle-men between the investors and public companies.
  • Investors are people who buy stocks for long term in hopes of increasing their wealth[low to mid]risk.
  • Traders are people who buy and sell stocks in hopes of gaining profit[high risk].
  • Day-Traders are people who buy and sell stocks at a high frequency(up to several times a day) in hopes of getting rich quick[very high risk].

Making Money in the Stock Market

There are a handful of elements in the stock market each of which allows a chance for lucrative sums to those who dabble in its business. While they all have similarities in the idea that they give back money in return, not all type of investment is the same.

Buy Low, Sell High (Stock Trading)

Buy stocks at low prices , sell when high. The difference is what your gain as profit.

Buying when the price of a stock is low and selling when it gets higher is the normal routine and the only way to make money in stock trading. But due to the dynamics involved in stock trading, making a profit through this method may actually be trickier than it sounds.

Another way to make a lucrative sum with this time is to be attentive with the goings-on in the market, that is, monitor the changes while setting eyes on the opportunity to make income by selling your stocks at a higher monetary value.

Compounding Interest (Long Term Investment)

When the price of the stock you hold increases, so does your net-worth.

Now that you have learned a few remunerative ways of growing your money in the stock market. Think long-term with your investment—by applying the principle of compounding interest.

Essentially, how compounding interest works is simply by re-investing your investments’ gains—possibly from a diversified portfolio. This add to your existing pool while waiting for their payback.

This process may not seem all that lucrative on your first year or even the next few years. But the real benefit to this method is around your retirement years. By then, your investment has snowballed enough to provide you a large sum to sustain a comfortable retirement.

Lending on Interest (Bonds)

Considered a fixed income security or investment, bonds are essentially loans which investors lend for a given period of time. Creditors or debtholders, who lend money on interest regarding bonds, earn fixed or variable interest rates over time.

When you speak of bonds in the market, you are essentially referring to entities (or issuers) like business companies, countries, or governments as borrowers which are in need of money in order to run a project or other activities. This is a way for the issuer to pool needed money, particularly when borrowing from a bank is not an option.

Unlike other more lucrative forms of investment in the stock market, the return on investment is guaranteed with your investment in bonds. This is secured by the contract made by the issuer towards its creditor which states the interest rate and maturity date.

Guaranteed Return on Investment (Dividends)

Some companies may choose to share a portion of their earnings in the form of cash or additional stocks.

If you are keen in the idea of growing your money securely but not in the context of interest but dividends, buying dividend stocks. That is, buying a piece of a company which promise to pay in dividends—is another good choice for investment.

Buying stocks from a company which still has not reached maturity may have the risk of giving out small dividends or a return to your investment once its stabilised and matured. However, that is not always the case. Some companies may actually give out high dividends eventually as a result of positive outcome in the business.
